The Quiet After

This is an original abstract acrylic painting, hand-painted in my home studio here in Rugby, Warwickshire. Two dense clusters of navy, charcoal and burnt orange sit either side of the canvas, parted by a pale, luminous channel of cream and soft blue running down the centre, as though the storm has passed and the sky is only just settling back into stillness.

The Story

The Quiet After is part of The Sublime Horizon, a collection inspired by the fleeting beauty of a distant thunderstorm I watched roll across the horizon from my garden. From a place of safety, the storm transformed the sky into a luminous expanse of orange, immense natural power becoming unexpectedly serene. This piece captures the moment just after the storm has moved on, when the noise has faded but its presence still lingers at the edges, and a quiet calm settles into the space it leaves behind. Painted with bold colour, expressive brushwork and richly textured impasto, it explores the paradox at the heart of the sublime: the coexistence of awe and tranquillity, chaos and beauty.
