The Calm Before

This is an original abstract acrylic painting, hand-painted in my home studio here in Rugby, Warwickshire. Soft blush pink and pale blue drift across a light, open ground, while denser passages of navy, burnt orange and charcoal gather at the edges, as though the sky is holding its breath just before the weather turns.

The Story

The Calm Before is part of The Sublime Horizon, a collection inspired by the fleeting beauty of a distant thunderstorm I watched roll across the horizon from my garden. From a place of safety, the storm transformed the sky into a luminous expanse of orange, immense natural power becoming unexpectedly serene. This piece captures that in-between moment, just before the storm arrives, when the air feels still and the colour has only just begun to shift. Painted with bold colour, expressive brushwork and richly textured impasto, it explores the paradox at the heart of the sublime: the coexistence of awe and tranquillity, chaos and beauty.

There's a gentleness with this work. The soft blush and pale blue give it a quieter presence than some of the others in the collection, even as the darker edges hint at what's coming.
